How-To Brew: Phin Filter
Making Vietnamese coffee with a traditional phin filter!
What you’ll need:
🔘Daybreak DARK roast coffee (medium fine size grind)
🔘 Phin filter
🔘Condensed milk
🔘Hot water
🔘Mixing spoons
🔘Ice cubes
🔘Glass cup (optional)
Add 2 tablespoons or 40-50g of condensed milk to your glass— feel free to add more to your liking
Place the phin filter on top of the glass and remove the lid and tamper screen inside
Add 2 heaping tablespoons (~15g) of ground coffee
Replace the tamper screen and screw back in, just adding enough pressure to keep water from disturbing the coffee grounds
Add between 15-30g of boiling water, enough to cover the grounds
Allow the coffee to bloom and expand for 20-30 seconds
Once coffee appears soaked, fill the phin filter with boiling water to the very top
Replace the lid and wait for coffee to slowly drip…
Vietnamese coffee is traditionally very strong and a slow drip; if you find that your coffee is dripping through too quickly that means you either have to decrease the grind size and make the coffee a little finer OR you have to increase the amount of coffee you’re using
Remember to aim for a medium fine grind size— not as a fine as an espresso but more fine that a French press
Carefully remove the lid and place the filter on top of it
Mix the coffee and the milk
You can drink the coffee hot or add ice cubes to enjoy it the traditional way!
